But first, what kind of year was 2019? We dived into the archives and discovered that the Chordify algorithm chordified more than 15 million songs; and that Chordify exceeded the number of 200 million unique visitors. After ploughing through heaps of big data, ten songs came floating to the surface. Spoiler alert: they’re all great!
The Top 2019 is based on the total number of jams and play-along time worldwide. Will your favorites be among them? Okay, we won't keep you waiting any longer. The ten most played songs of 2019 are …
At number ten in the top 2019 we find Creedence Clearwater Revival with their 1971 classic “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.” Beautiful in its simplicity, easy chord progression, and a perfect song for beginners that don’t mind a heavy sound.
Woohoo! A ukulele song in the Top 2019! And what a song? At number nine we find the amicable and lovable man from Hawaii: Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. World famous for his version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” form 1990. Originally written for the 1930s film “The Wizard of Oz.” It’s nice to see that a classic like that still plucks at the heart and guitar strings so many decades later.
In April the Irish rock group The Cranberries released their last album ever. Singer Dolores O'Riordan died in 2018 and “In the End” features the last recordings she did. In the Top Play-Along Songs of 2019 we find the biggest Cranberries hit “Zombie” from 1994. This powerful song is a perfect addition to your repertoire.

“On a dark desert highway.” The famous first words of the rock classic “Hotel California” by The Eagles. Even in 2019 this hit from 1977 is extremely popular. Guitarists of all sorts have been playing it for years. Because of the holidays Chordify added a special feature: jingle bells. To add them to this classic, just hit the special button next to the play button on the “Hotel California” song page. Those guitars never sounded this Christmassy.

The film with the same name about the life of Freddie Mercury was released in the fall of 2018. Partly due to the enormous success of the biopic, the hit song “Bohemian Rhapsody” became even more popular than it was before. In January 2019 for example, this live version with Korean subtitles was in the Top 5 of Asia's most played songs.

On the fifth position we find the symphonic “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. This song is doing extremely well with absolute beginners. When your fingertips hurt, your hands ache and you almost want to give up playing, then “Nothing Else Matters” comes to save the day. The iconic intro serves everyone who touches the guitar for the first time, as a bright light in the darkness: so beautiful and so easy to play!
There he is: the play-along king of 2018. Ed Sheeran was also played extremely often in 2019. “Perfect” is still a favorite in the Chordify community. This song consists of five chords and can be learned quickly. If you haven’t mastered it yet, this is the moment! Protip: is the chord progression too difficult for you? Place a capo on the first fret or use the transpose function (Premium feature) to make it easier.

Latin pop summer vibes y’all! Among all the classics in this play-along top list, this is the biggest summer hit of 2019. “Señorita” was released in June and conquered the charts all over the world. Spicy detail: Shawn and Camila are in a romantic relationship since July 4. So what are you waiting for? Grab your Spanish guitar and conquer the love of your life! This song will definitely do the trick.

At number two, we find the beautiful song “Let Her Go” by Passenger. This song is simple and very suitable for guitar, piano and ukulele. Last year we found Passenger at number 8 in the list of play-along songs of 2018. This year it was played even more often! And to be honest, it is indeed very difficult to let this beautiful song pass by. Or let her go.

It will come as no surprise to those that follow the monthly Top 5: the most played song of 2019 is “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The song, from the soundtrack of “A Star Is Born,” won several Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe and many more international prizes. After several sizzling live performances during the accompanying award ceremonies, the popularity of the film and the soundtrack grew even further.
It is rare that a film’s story and soundtrack reinforce each other so well. “Shallow” consists of only a few basic chords that can be played beautifully on both guitar and piano. Is this because Bradley plays the guitar and Gaga prefers the piano?
One thing is certain: whether or not you have added “Shallow” to your repertoire, it is an absolutely justified winner of this Top 2019. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are the most played artists of 2019, congratulations!
